Nine nights in the Luangwa valley and on the Zambezi, from $5,380 per person on two sharing. This Zambia vacation package rests half its weight on conditions, and the numbers below say how often that half fails.

What half at risk means here

What the weather can cancel
The four walking mornings in the Luangwa valley and the view of the Eastern Cataract. On foot needs hard ground and short grass; the falls face is either buried in spray or thinned to bare rock, depending on the week you pick.
How often it actually happens
In June and July the spray column off the main face stands above 250 meters and hides the Eastern Cataract on roughly 2 mornings in 3. From mid October the Zambian lip runs at about a tenth of its April volume and in something like 1 year in 3 goes to dry rock in long stretches, while the first storms land in the last week of November with 8 to 10 rain days in that month.
What you do instead
The walking morning becomes a vehicle morning from the same camp, called by the guide at 05:15 and not put to a vote; you cover more ground and read much less of it. If the lip is dry, the second falls morning is spent on the gorge floor below it, where water runs in every month, and the itinerary does not shorten.
What money comes back
None, from us or from the camps. Nights are paid for when they are booked rather than when they work, and none of the companies holding your beds price a weather clause; travel insurance is not something we arrange or point you toward.
Who should not book this
If the whole reason for going is one photograph of the falls at full width, do not take a September to December date, and do not take a June date expecting to see through the spray. If you will not walk 10 km at first light with a 40C afternoon behind it, this is not your trip in any month.

The fourth row is the one this trade prints smallest, and on most of these trips it says nothing comes back. It stands above the price deliberately.

The nine nights, itemized

  • Four nights in the Luangwa valley, walking from 05:45 each morning with a guide and an armed scout, 8 to 12 km before the heat arrives
  • Three nights upriver of the lip on the Zambezi, camp reached by boat, two evenings on the water and one day with nothing scheduled
  • Two nights within 15 minutes of the Eastern Cataract
  • Two falls mornings on separate, non consecutive days instead of one, which is the single change that most often rescues the view when spray or low water is running against you
  • Internal transport: one light aircraft leg of about 90 minutes, road transfers of 40 and 25 minutes, and the boat
  • Four days of park fees, guide fees, and the walking permits the camps hold
  • Every meal from the first dinner to the last breakfast, drinking water, and daily laundry at both camps

Costs that arrive separately

  • Getting to the country. International flights sit outside this figure and are priced on their own, since the fare out of Cleveland moves by several hundred dollars between June and October
  • Entry documents. We do not arrange visas or permits, we do not check them, and nothing here should be read as advice on them
  • Travel insurance is not arranged by us and we name nobody who sells it
  • Tips, which in this valley run $20 to $30 per person per day across guides, scouts and camp staff
  • A room of your own, from $890 for the nine nights
  • Anything sold at the falls itself, including the 15 minute flight over the gorge from about $190, which does not lift when gusts pass 25 knots

What it costs

from $5,380 per person

Covering
9 nights, river and valley week with two falls mornings.
Taken as read
A room shared between two, except where any of the six otherwise for your case.
What lifts it
A crowded month, a better room, a decision left late, and every hour you hand to somebody else to arrange.
When it stops moving
The moment an operator signs its own name under it. Before that, read it as the floor of a spread this desk has actually seen.

You settle with the operator, through whatever system they run. Not a cent of it passes through here, and this office never sees a card.

Which months work and which ones do not

June and July hand you the walking and take the view. The valley is dry, nights fall to about 6C, the grass is short and animals read easily on foot. The falls at the same time are carrying close to ten times what they carry in late October, and the spray off the main face stands high enough to soak the footpaths and blank the Eastern Cataract for most of the morning. You will see water. You will not reliably see the falls.

September through November reverses both halves. The spray drops away, the basalt shows, and by late October long sections of the Zambian lip can be dry rock while the valley sits at 40C through the afternoon. Walking continues, starting earlier and finishing sooner.

The weeks I argue people out of are the last in November and the first two in December. Storms begin then, the black soil turns, walks are cut short at no notice, and several valley camps close until the second half of May. August is the nearest thing to a compromise: water still on the face, spray low enough to see through, ground hard enough to cover on foot.

Decided at confirmation

Four things stay open until the booking is confirmed. Which of the two falls mornings is held back as the reserve, and how late in the nine nights it can be pushed. Whether the fourth valley night stays at the main camp or moves two hours further in to a smaller one, a difference of about $260 per person. Which of the two daily light aircraft slots you take, since the later one costs you a morning on foot. And whether a room of your own is held, which we keep open until 60 days out and then release.
