The Weather Risk in a Total Eclipse Vacation Package
Totality lasts minutes, and one cloud ends it. We price and describe a total eclipse vacation package around that fact rather than around the photographs.
What all of it means here
- What the weather can cancel
- Totality itself. The chase site is fixed 36 to 48 hours out, but one band of cumulus over the path at second contact removes the entire event, and the shadow does not come back over that ground for decades.
- How often it actually happens
- We only run segments crossing dry interior ground in their dry months, where 20 years of satellite record put mid-afternoon cloud cover at 30 to 40 percent. About one chase in three loses totality outright, and roughly one in ten sees it through thin high cloud.
- What you do instead
- The group drives. Briefings run at 72, 48 and 24 hours, and the vehicles will cover up to 400 miles on eclipse morning to reach a gap. If the gap closes you stand in the dark under cloud for four minutes, and the remaining nights run exactly as printed.
- What money comes back
- None, from us or from anyone we book with. The rooms were slept in, the vehicles ran and the drivers worked. Eclipse-week beds inside the path are held 12 to 18 months out and are non-refundable from the day they are taken. No insurance of any kind is arranged here and we name no provider.
- Who should not book this
- Anyone who can travel for this only once. If losing four minutes would make the other 8 nights feel wasted, do not book: a third of groups go home having seen nothing but the temperature drop and the birds go quiet.
The fourth row is the one this trade prints smallest, and on most of these trips it says nothing comes back. It stands above the price deliberately.

- Repositioning flights if the group abandons the region entirely, from $340 per person
- Solar filters for your own cameras and eyepieces; hand-held viewers are the only optics supplied
- Meals other than breakfast, running $45 to $70 a day in the towns we use
- Travel insurance, which is not arranged here and not recommended here
- Any second attempt. There is no re-run of this trip and no credit toward another one.

You settle with the operator, through whatever system they run. Not a cent of it passes through here, and this office never sees a card.
Which segments we run, and which we skip
The date of a total eclipse is fixed centuries in advance. The only real decision is where along the track to stand, and that is a climate decision taken years out. We sell segments crossing high interior plateaus in their own dry months, usually April and August, where the stations we use average 30 to 40 percent cloud cover in mid-afternoon.
We do not sell landfall in a wet season. A tropical coast in its rainy months runs 18 to 24 rain days and 70 to 80 percent afternoon cloud, and no morning drive gets you out from under a system that wide. We also skip segments where maximum eclipse falls within 90 minutes of local sunset, because the sun is low, you are looking through several times the air, and cloud has had all day to build.
The weeks we would talk you out of are the ones people ask for by name, since they are the segments near a large city or a shoreline. Convenience and cloud records point in opposite directions almost every time.
Settled when you confirm
Four things stay open until confirmation, and each changes the week. Which of the two or three base towns you sleep in, which sets the length of the eclipse-morning drive. Whether the group runs one vehicle or two, which decides whether it can split under a broken sky. Whether you take the 04:00 departure, which buys roughly 200 extra miles of choice. And where along the centerline your first-choice site sits, since the widest point often has one road out and 4,000 other cars on it.
